WHY RIDE SOUTH INDIA?

Coast to Coast Across the Deccan

South India isn’t a checklist of temples; it’s a road that keeps changing its mind. In two weeks you cross from the Bay of Bengal to the Arabian Sea — sea-level shore temples, seventy-hairpin climbs into the Eastern Ghats, tea country in the clouds, tiger reserves, coffee hills, and a rainforest that grows king cobras. You come for the big names. You remember the road in between.

The land is the Deccan plateau, fenced on both sides by the Western and Eastern Ghats and edged by two coastlines. This is India at its most layered: Tamil temple towns and French Pondicherry, Kerala’s tea and spice hills, Karnataka’s coffee and rainforest, and the Konkan beaches to finish. Four states, three climates, and a dozen ghat roads that were clearly designed by someone who loved corners.

We cross the south in Mahindra Thars — a proper 4×4 that shrugs off ghat hairpins, forest tracks and the odd river crossing, and looks right doing it. The route runs from the shore temples at Mahabalipuram through the tiger country of the Nilgiris to the king-cobra rainforest of Agumbe and out to the Goan coast. Highways move us between regions; the ghat roads and back lanes are the reason to come. Nights are comfortable — a beach resort, a palace on a lake, a coffee estate, a forest lodge.

Wildlife scene featuring trees and animals in a natural setting.

THE LAY OF THE LAND

WHAT YOU'RE RIDING INTO

HISTORY & HERITAGE

South India carries the country’s oldest continuous story: Pallava shore temples carved from granite in the 8th century, Chola bronzes, the Hoysala star-temples at Belur and Halebidu, and Tipu Sultan’s Mysore. Then the newcomers — the French at Pondicherry, the British hill stations of the Nilgiris, and Auroville’s experiment in living. Expect temple towns older than most countries, and colonial streets still signed in a language nobody drives in any more.

TERRAIN & CLIMATE

This is the ghat country. The Deccan plateau sits between two mountain walls — the Western and Eastern Ghats — and the whole tour is about climbing and dropping between them: the seventy hairpins of Kolli, the thirty-six of Kalhatty, the Agumbe rainforest ghat. Coast is hot and humid; the hill stations (Ooty, Munnar) turn genuinely cold at night. We drive October to March, after the monsoon has gone and the roads have dried but the hills are still green. Pack for beach heat and mountain chill in the same bag.

ROADS & LIFE

South India’s roads run the full spectrum in a fortnight: coastal highway on the East Coast Road, plains expressway, and then ghat after ghat — tight, steep, forested, and mostly empty of tourists. The 4×4 earns its keep on the Kalhatty bends, the Agumbe ghat, and the desolate Sharavathi ferry crossing that almost nobody knows. Between the drives is the real south: tea pickers, coffee estates, elephants on the Mudumalai road, filter coffee at every stop, and a temple bell somewhere in earshot the whole way.

ROUTE OVERVIEW: COAST TO COAST

Fourteen days from the East Coast to the West, crossing the Deccan through four states — Tamil Nadu’s temple coast, Kerala’s tea and spice hills, Karnataka’s coffee and rainforest, and the Goan beaches to finish. Strung together by the great ghat roads and, wherever we can, the back lanes and the one ferry nobody publicises. The highways move us; the ghats are the reason to come.

Day 01
Arrive Chennai → Mahabalipuram
56 km · transfer
The tour gathers on the coast. You land in Chennai and drive an hour south down the East Coast Road to Mahabalipuram, a fishing town that also happens to hold some of the finest stone-carving on earth. The 8th-century Shore Temple stands right on the Bay of Bengal, granite worn smooth by fourteen hundred years of salt wind. You settle into a beach resort, feet in the sand, and let the surf do the talking on the night before a long road.

A short, easy coastal day down the East Coast Road — fishing villages, salt pans and open sea the whole way. You break at Auroville, the experimental township founded in 1968, for lunch at Tanto: wood-fired pizza and spelt-dough pasta grown in their own gardens, probably the best kitchen for a hundred miles. The golden Matrimandir sphere sits at the centre of Auroville if you want the meditation-garden view. You finish in Pondicherry's White Town — mustard-yellow colonial houses, streets still signed in French, and a seafront promenade made for the evening.

Day 03
Pondicherry → Kolli Hills
241 km · 70 hairpins
West off the coast and into the Eastern Ghats, on fast plains highway that saves its drama for the end. The road tips up into the Kollimalai and delivers one of India's great climbs: seventy continuous numbered hairpin bends, each one opening a new view back over the plains. At the top sits the Arappaleeswarar temple, a thousand years old, and a thousand steps below it the Agaya Gangai — the 'Ganges of the Sky' — a 300-foot waterfall into a forested gorge. Day 04
Kolli Hills → Thekkady
319 km · long day
The long haul of the trip, and worth it. Down the seventy bends at dawn, then a plains transit south-west through Karur, Dindigul and Theni before the Western Ghats rise ahead and the road climbs into the cardamom hills of Kerala. Tonight is the one that stays with people: you sleep inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve itself, at a Kerala Tourism lodge — the island Lake Palace, a former Travancore summer palace on the water, or the jungle-edge Aranya Nivas. The reserve gate shuts at five; we roll in before it, into the quiet on the far side.

Day 05
Thekkady → Munnar
86 km · tea country
A short day that starts on the water. At first light you take the Periyar lake boat — the only reserve in India you watch from a boat — for elephant, gaur and sambar at the shoreline. Then the road climbs the KK route through the spice belt of cardamom, pepper and vanilla into Munnar, where the hills turn into an unbroken carpet of tea, the highest in South India. The evening is yours for a traditional Kathakali or Kalaripayattu performance in town — painted faces, drums, and four hundred years of martial art.

Day 06
Munnar → Ooty
255 km · Nilgiri ghats
A big, beautiful ghat day linking Kerala's tea to Tamil Nadu's. You drop out of Munnar past Marayoor — India's only natural sandalwood forest, dolmens and jaggery country — onto the coconut plains at Udumalpet and Pollachi, then climb the Nilgiri wall through Coonoor's tea gardens. Ooty waits at the top: the 'Queen of Hill Stations' at 2,240 metres, all Raj-era gardens, boating lakes and cold, clean air. A long day in the saddle of the Thar, and the kind of scenery that makes the distance disappear.

A day off the road, and the one ride that isn't behind the wheel. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway — the 1908 steam rack-railway, a UNESCO World Heritage line and the steepest in Asia — hauls you down to Coonoor and back through tea and tunnels. The rest of Ooty is yours: the botanical gardens the British laid out in 1848, the lake, and Doddabetta, the highest peak in the Nilgiris. The wildlife day, and it opens with the steepest ghat in South India. The Kalhatty road drops off Ooty's grassland through thirty-six tight hairpin bends into the dry Sigur forest in barely a dozen kilometres — an elephant corridor, closed to buses and to night traffic. At the bottom you're in tiger country: through Mudumalai's elephant camp at Theppakadu, across into Karnataka's Bandipur, and on into Kerala's Wayanad, where the night is spent at a resort on the very edge of the forest. Keep the camera on your lap; the animals don't wait for viewpoints.

130 km · coffee country
Out of the forest and into the coffee. A morning in Wayanad first, if the legs allow — the Neolithic petroglyphs of the Edakkal caves, or the heart-shaped lake on the Chembra trail — then the road runs west through the Kabini fringe into Kodagu, the coffee capital they call the Scotland of India. You climb into Madikeri for an estate night among the plantations: Abbey Falls in its spice garden, Raja's Seat for the sunset over the Western Ghats, and a mug of estate-grown coffee that ruins the supermarket kind forever.

You finish at Agumbe, the 'Cherrapunji of the South,' a rainforest ridge famous for two things: the Sunset Point view clear across the Ghats to the Arabian Sea, and being the home of the king cobra — Romulus Whitaker's research station sits in the forest here. A short day built around a secret. Desolate, silent, and all yours. On the other side lies Jog Falls, where the Sharavathi throws itself 253 metres off the plateau in four separate cascades — India's second-highest waterfall, and best of all after rain. Night at a resort within earshot of the roar.

West and north through the areca and spice country of the Uttara Kannada ghats — Siddapur, Sirsi, Yellapur — before the Western Ghats finally hand you down to the Konkan coast and the sea reappears on your left. You run up the coastal highway into Goa and settle in the quieter south of the state, away from the crowds: a stretch of Palolem or Colva or Benaulim, the Arabian Sea a fortnight and a whole subcontinent's width from where you started, on the far coast, two weeks ago.

ARE YOU A GOOD FIT?

YOU'RE AN OUTRIDER IF

SAVE YOUR MONEY IF

Are You A Good Fit?
You're An Outrider If
You want the whole south — coast, ghats, tea, coffee and rainforest, not just the postcards
You're happy behind the wheel of a 4x4 for a long, winding ghat day
Wildlife, waterfalls and a ferry nobody's heard of sound like your kind of week
You like your adventure with a comfortable bed and a hot dinner at the end of it
You can meet heat, hairpins and a curious crowd with a grin
You're here to travel at your own pace — no ego, no racing
Save Your Money If
Temples, tea and coffee estates leave you cold
A 300 km ghat day reads as a threat rather than a pleasure
You treat a group trip as a solo mission with witnesses
You need every road wide, straight and utterly predictable
Heat, humidity and cheerful chaos ruin your day instead of making it
The phrase 'forest track' makes you anxious instead of curious
